How can we do Upward Sports?

Upward Unlimited began as a US ministry, but has been blessed with the opportunity to take the Upward ministry to children of other countries and cultures. Beginning with our presence in South Africa in 2005, and now churches conducting Upward leagues and camps in Ireland, Brazil, Ukraine and Canada, Upward has experienced growing interest in sports as a community ministry in these areas.

When you have a passion for making a difference in your community, this passion will likely reveal the problem of discovering the best way to reach out to your community. Being valuable and relevant to your community is critical for any and all successful efforts. We have learned over 23 years of ministry that using sports is almost always an effective way to serve. Therefore, Upward has developed sports experiences that churches can use effectively anywhere in the world.

Upward trains and provides tools to help your church make an impact in the lives of children and families in your community. An Upward league gives individuals in your congregation a chance to contribute in serving others through sports. Your church members would have the opportunity to serve as commissioners, coaches, referees, or prayer partners. In these roles they have the opportunity to have a life changing impact on the children in their leagues.

Why Children?

Children are our future.  If the church can get involved with supporting local families in the community, then they can have an impact on that future.

A child’s moral foundation is in place by the age of 12 to 15.  Teaching relevant moral truths in the context of sports will provide a better chance of them being received.

75% of children have dropped out of organized sports by the age of 13.  Having a sports experience focused on fun and fairness may keep them involved for life

What are these children saying about organized sports?

37% Wished no parents watched them play

41% Indicated that they've awakened in the middle of the night worrying about a game

69% Indicated that they prefer a coach who puts more priority on fun than winning
